Uniting Industry-Academia through Artificial Intelligence

AI4IA Webinar

I had the opportunity to attend the AI4IA (Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Academia) webinar as part of my coursework at Bataan Peninsula State University. This event brought together industry professionals, academics, and students to discuss the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on both sectors.

The webinar was eye-opening, showcasing how AI is revolutionizing industries and creating new opportunities for innovation and growth. As someone interested in both technology and professional development, this event aligned perfectly with my career goals.

Event Details

  • Bataan Peninsula State University - Main Campus, Balanga City, Bataan, Philippines
  • October 29, 2025
  • Organizer: BPSU College of Computer Studies - Student Government
  • My Role: Attendee

Meet the Speakers

The webinar featured distinguished speakers from both industry and academia, bringing diverse perspectives on AI's transformative role:

Dr. Arun Kumar Sangaiah

Dr. Arun Kumar Sangaiah

Distinguished Professor

National Yunlin University of Science and Technology

A leading researcher in artificial intelligence, Dr. Sangaiah shared insightful perspectives on how AI can revolutionize both the corporate sector and educational institutions. His talk focused on practical applications of AI that help companies automate processes, improve decision-making, and enhance productivity. For students, he emphasized how AI skills are becoming increasingly essential in the job market and discussed emerging career opportunities in AI development, machine learning, and data science. His research demonstrates that organizations investing in AI early will have significant competitive advantages in the future.

Mr. Dale Dean Martensen

Mr. Dale Dean Martensen

Provincial Head

DICT (Department of Information and Communications Technology) Bataan

As the Provincial Head of DICT Bataan, Mr. Martensen presented the government's strategic approach to supporting IT education and student development. He highlighted how DICT initiatives provide free webinars, training programs, and skill-building workshops to empower students and educators. His presentation showcased government-sponsored events like hackathons, coding competitions, and tech conferences that offer students hands-on experience and networking opportunities. DICT's partnerships with educational institutions like BPSU demonstrate the government's commitment to bridging the digital skills gap and creating pathways for students to succeed in the technology sector. These programs are essential in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth.

Mr. Francis Xavier Hernandez

Mr. Francis Xavier Hernandez

Co-founder and Vice President

Audentes Technologies Inc.

Mr. Hernandez emphasized the critical importance of professional certifications in advancing IT careers and demonstrated how Audentes Technologies is working to make industry-recognized credentials more accessible. He highlighted a significant gap in the Philippines where less than 1% of IT students hold professional certifications despite their high demand in the job market. This lack of credentials creates barriers to employment and career growth. Recognizing this challenge, Audentes partnered with Batangas Peninsula State University (BPSU) to provide affordable Certiport certification badge programs, making internationally recognized credentials accessible to students at a fraction of the regular cost. This initiative directly addresses the skills certification gap and empowers students to compete in the global job market.

Key Takeaways

The webinar presented several powerful insights about the current state and future of AI:

1. AI is Bridging the Gap Between Industry and Academia

One of the most compelling points was how AI research from universities is directly impacting real-world applications in industry. Companies are no longer just implementing AI they're partnering with academic institutions to develop cutting-edge solutions. This collaboration is creating unprecedented opportunities for innovation.

2. The Skills Gap is Real

Industry representatives emphasized that while AI is in high demand, there's a significant gap in skilled professionals who can implement and manage AI systems. This is a golden opportunity for developers and engineers to upskill and position themselves for high-value roles.

3. AI is Democratizing Technology

Tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and other AI platforms are making AI accessible to everyone. The barrier to entry is lower than ever, but the potential to create value is higher.

"AI isn't the future it's already here. The question isn't whether AI will transform your industry, but how quickly you'll adapt."

What I Learned

Attending this webinar reinforced my belief that I need to expand my skillset beyond frontend development. While building beautiful interfaces is important, understanding how to integrate AI capabilities into applications is becoming essential.

The presentations showcased practical applications of AI in various fields from healthcare diagnostics to e-commerce personalization to autonomous systems. Each use case demonstrated how AI creates competitive advantages and opens new business opportunities.

Actionable Insights

  • Learn AI Fundamentals: I'm planning to take courses on machine learning and neural networks to understand how AI works at a foundational level.
  • Explore AI APIs: Tools like OpenAI API, Google AI, and others make it easy to integrate AI into applications without being an ML expert.
  • Stay Updated: AI is evolving rapidly. Following industry news and research is crucial.
  • Build AI-Powered Projects: Practical experience is invaluable. I plan to build projects that incorporate AI features.

Networking Opportunities

Beyond the content, the webinar provided valuable networking opportunities. I connected with other students, academics, and industry professionals who share similar interests in AI. These connections could lead to collaborations, mentorship, and career opportunities down the road.

Looking Forward

This event reinforced that the tech industry is moving toward AI-first development. As a developer, I can no longer ignore AI I need to embrace it, learn it, and find ways to integrate it into my projects.

"The professionals who thrive in the next decade will be those who combine domain expertise with AI literacy. That's the direction I'm heading."

Events like AI4IA are invaluable for staying ahead of the curve and understanding where technology is headed. I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend and look forward to implementing the insights I gained into my future projects and career.
