Episode 4: Sip & Scale

Sip & Scale Networking Event

I had the pleasure of attending Episode 4: Sip & Scale, a networking event held at Hanan Coffee Brewers in San Jose, Balanga City. This intimate gathering brought together tech professionals, entrepreneurs, designers, and developers for meaningful conversations and connections.

What made this event special wasn't just the location or the great coffee it was the caliber of people in attendance. I had the opportunity to network with professionals from Canva and several startup founders, which was incredibly valuable for my career growth.

Event Details

  • Hanan Coffee Brewers - San Jose Branch, Balanga City, Bataan, Philippines
  • October 25, 2025
  • Organizer: Local Tech Community
  • My Role: Attendee & Networker

The Atmosphere

The coffee shop setting created a relaxed yet professional environment perfect for networking. Unlike formal conference settings, this allowed for more genuine conversations and deeper connections. People weren't just handing out business cards they were actually discussing ideas, challenges, and opportunities.

Who Was There?

The attendees included:

  • Canva Professionals: Representatives from the design platform who shared insights about design, automation, and tool development.
  • Startup Founders: Entrepreneurs at various stages of their journey, from just starting to scaling their businesses.
  • Developers and Designers: Like myself, professionals building the tech ecosystem in our region.
  • Business Leaders: Executives looking to understand technology trends and connect with innovators.

Key Conversations

I had several memorable conversations that left a lasting impression:

Learning from Canva Professionals

The Canva team talked about their approach to building intuitive interfaces and how they prioritize user experience at every level. As a frontend developer with an eye for design, this resonated deeply with me. They emphasized that great design isn't just about aesthetics it's about solving user problems efficiently.

"Design is solved when the user can accomplish their goal without thinking about the tool. That's what Canva strives for."

Understanding the Startup Mindset

The startup founders shared their journeys the challenges they faced, the pivots they made, and the lessons they learned. One founder's advice particularly stuck with me: "Your first product won't be perfect, but getting it in front of users is more important than building in isolation." This validates my approach to rapid prototyping and MVP development.

The Importance of Timing and Luck

One interesting discussion was about how success isn't just skill and hard work timing and a bit of luck play a role too. However, the consensus was that if you're prepared, skilled, and networking actively, you create opportunities where luck can find you.

Insights I Gained

1. The Tech Ecosystem is Smaller Than You Think

It was fascinating to see how interconnected everyone is. A developer knew someone at a startup, who knew someone at Canva, who recommended a designer to a friend's company. These connections create opportunities and collaborations.

2. Soft Skills Matter as Much as Technical Skills

In our conversations, it became clear that communication, leadership, and the ability to work with others are just as valuable as technical expertise. As I transition toward full-stack development and project management, this reinforced the importance of developing these skills.

3. Stay Curious and Keep Learning

Every professional at the event emphasized continuous learning. Whether it's learning new tools, understanding business trends, or exploring adjacent fields, the mindset of a learner separates successful professionals from the rest.

4. Location Matters, But Connection Matters More

While the tech industry is global, local connections are invaluable. Being part of the local tech community in Bataan opens doors and creates unexpected opportunities.

Connections Made

I exchanged contact information with several professionals and followed up after the event. I'm particularly excited about potential collaborations and mentorship opportunities that emerged from these conversations.

Takeaway

Events like Sip & Scale are exactly what the local tech community needs. They're low-pressure, relationship-focused, and create genuine connections. I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend and connect with such inspiring professionals.

"Your network is your net worth. Events like Sip & Scale aren't just about business they're about building a community of like-minded professionals who support each other."

If you're a developer, designer, or entrepreneur in the Bataan area, I highly recommend attending future episodes of Sip & Scale. The value extends beyond the event itself it's the relationships you build and the doors that open from those connections.
